Students may be granted permission to take a reduced course load if they have one of the following circumstances:
      Academic Difficulties
      Medical Conditions
Final Semester of program of study

In the case of academic difficulties:
A reduced course load for academic difficulties can be approved only once (only for ONE semester) while the student is pursuing a course of study at CIU.

In the case of a medical condition:
The medical condition must be substantiated by "medical documentation from a licensed medical doctor, doctor of osteopathy, or licensed clinical psychologist." RCLs (Reduced Course Loads) for medical conditions can be granted for no more than 12 months in the aggregate during any one course of study. Thus, a student would only be able to study in the states under a RCL for two semesters. Like all reduced course load authorizations, RCL authorizations for medical reasons must be approved by the DSO prior to the reduction in course load. The rule also requires the DSO to reauthorize the RCL each new term or session.

The CIU Reduced Course Load Authorization Form must be completed by you and your academic advisor. Then the form must be submitted to the International Student Advisor/DSO before the last day of drop/add period for the semester. The DSO will review the form and determine if approval will be given for a reduced course load.
